Glacier discovery tour

Venture deeper into the breathtaking world of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, on an unforgettable journey across the dramatic outlet glacier Falljökull, renowned for its spectacular blue icefall and ever-changing glacial landscapes.

Your adventure begins at Freysnes Service Station, where you’ll meet your certified glacier guide and receive all the necessary safety equipment before setting off towards the glacier. From there, a specially equipped 4×4 vehicle takes you closer to the ice, allowing you to reach areas inaccessible to regular vehicles while minimizing the environmental impact through carbon-offset transportation.

Once at the glacier’s edge, you’ll strap on your crampons, grab your ice axe and begin an exciting ascent across the ancient ice. Climbing more than 300 metres towards the magnificent blue icefall, you’ll discover a constantly evolving landscape shaped by nature over thousands of years.

Along the way, you’ll encounter impressive crevasses, moulins, ice formations, waterfalls and towering walls of brilliant blue ice while your guide shares fascinating insights into the glacier’s history, geology and the powerful natural forces that continue to shape it today.

Designed for those looking to spend more time exploring Iceland’s frozen wilderness, this extended experience offers a more immersive glacier adventure while remaining suitable for first-time visitors with a reasonable level of fitness. No previous glacier hiking experience is required.

What to Bring

To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience, we recommend bringing:

Hiking boots with ankle support
Warm, weather-appropriate outdoor clothing
Hat and gloves
Sunglasses and sunscreen on sunny days

Hiking boots can be rented on-site for 1,500 ISK if needed.

For your safety, your guide will check that your footwear is suitable for glacier travel before fitting crampons. If your shoes do not provide adequate support or cannot securely accommodate crampons, hiking boots will be available to rent before the tour begins.
