Glacier’s Edge – Sólheimajökull Glacier Walk

Get closer to one of Iceland’s most impressive glaciers on this easy and family-friendly walk to the edge of Sólheimajökull.

Glacier’s Edge is a relaxed 2-hour guided experience following the glacier lagoon towards the ice. Unlike a traditional glacier hike, you won’t walk onto the glacier itself, meaning there’s no need for crampons, harnesses, ice axes or previous glacier experience. Instead, you’ll follow a mostly flat gravel trail through the dramatic landscape shaped by the retreating glacier.

Along the way, your certified glacier guide will bring the landscape to life, explaining how Sólheimajökull formed, how the ice continues to move and reshape the valley, and what the dark layers of volcanic ash visible within the glacier can tell us about Iceland’s volcanic past.

As you approach the glacier, you’ll follow the shores of the lagoon and may spot pieces of ice and floating icebergs in the water. At the glacier’s edge, take time to enjoy the scenery and see the immense scale of Sólheimajökull up close.

Before heading back, you’ll stop beside the lagoon for hot chocolate or coffee and cookies, surrounded by the rugged scenery of Iceland’s South Coast.

With no technical glacier experience required and children of all ages welcome, this is an excellent choice for families, first-time visitors and anyone who wants to experience a glacier up close without taking part in a full glacier hike.

Itinerary

Meet your guide at the yellow school bus in the Sólheimajökull parking area, where you’ll receive a helmet and hiking poles before setting off.

The walk begins by following a meltwater river towards the glacier lagoon. Along the way, you’ll cross a landscape shaped by the movement of the ice, passing moraines and other geological features that reveal how Sólheimajökull has changed over time.

As you continue towards the glacier, your guide will explain how the ice forms and moves, why the lagoon continues to change as the glacier retreats, and how layers of black volcanic ash became trapped within the ice.

The trail eventually brings you close to the glacier’s edge, where you can take in views across the lagoon and may see icebergs floating in the water. You’ll remain on the marked trail rather than walking onto the glacier itself.

Before returning, the group will stop beside the lagoon for hot chocolate or coffee and cookies! a chance to warm up, enjoy the surroundings and take photos before following the trail back to the meeting point.

Please Note

This tour is rated easy and requires no previous glacier experience. Guests should, however, be comfortable walking approximately 2.5-3 km on mostly flat gravel paths, which can be uneven in places.

The experience takes you to the edge of the glacier rather than onto the ice, so crampons, harnesses and ice axes are not required.

Children are welcome but must remain accompanied by an adult throughout the experience.

Weather and glacier conditions in Iceland can change quickly, so please dress appropriately for the conditions on the day of your tour.

Cancellation: Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.
